October 1997

Dear Members,

Here is a brief update on what is happening. The Park Board is going to begin a pilot project, possibly this month, with off-leash times and/or places. I'm told they don't know exactly what this will be as yet, so I don't have any more details for you. Feel free to call me for more information as time goes on as I will be keeping in touch with them throughout the winter. You are always welcome to call me to get any kind of information, I enjoy hearing from our membership and having a chance to get to know you all a little better. I just ask you not to phone after 9 p.m., as I get up at 5 a.m. every day and sometimes even earlier.

City Hall has formed an Animal Study Task Force and I, as the representative of the Vancouver Dog Owner's Association, will be on the "Dog Committee". I think this is really a great opportunity for us; already at our first meeting the topics of Pets on Transit, and Pets in Rental Housing have been mentioned as important issues to address! So I have high hopes that some of these problems will be resolved a lot faster than we could have done on our own. Of course, only time will tell. The Task Force includes members of the SPCA, City pound, GVRD, Park Board, Wildlife Services, and two dog trainers. We will meet once a month and it is headed by Nancy Chiavario. There will be a "Dog Committee", a "Cat Committee", and an "Other Pets Committee"

We now have a Board of Directors of five, including myself. Debra, who is on the board, has designed a web site for us. She says-. "With the contribution of time and services from Incognito Software and several UBC Internet Publishing Students, a web site for the Association will be ready to go live by the end of November. The web site will be full of information on the Association, the off-leash issue, training, education, housing and lots of other fun stuff. We hope you'll come and visit us at http://www.vandog.org".

Thanks to you all for your incredibly generous donations of time, energy, and funds!

For those of you who are interested in being on our Education Committee, our first meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 28th at 7:30 p.m., at:

Kitsilano Community Centre, 2690 Larch St. (Corner of 12th Ave.)

I admit that I selfishly keep these meeting places close to my home, but I don't want you members from other parts of the city to feel deterred from coming. This committee will only work well if all areas are represented. There's lots of parking and the Broadway bus, or the #10 bus will bring you within a couple of blocks of the Centre. Please do phone me in advance to let me know if you are coming; if there's going to be a large attendance, we may need to move to a bigger meeting space.

Finally, I'd like to hear from members on ideas for events we could have as an association that would be more social and fun. Also, with luck, your next newsletter, (in the new year) will be a real one, and any of you who would like to buy some space in it for advertising, let me know.

Bye for now, Glen Swain
