About VANDOG

We are an organization of responsible dog owners dedicated to lobbying the necessary governmental departments and boards to effect a more dog-friendly city and to providing education to dog owners on responsible dog ownership.

We formed in June 1997 in response to an indiscriminate ticketing blitz on dogs seen off-leash in city parks by the Park Board and the City Pound. We presented a three-part proposal to the Park Board and City Councillors to amend the current Animal Control By-law, asking that off-leash dogs be allowed in all parks in the morning until 9 AM, that all larger parks have off-leash areas for use at all times of the day, and that there be some beach areas accessible to dogs for swimming. The Park Board did respond to us and we met with them to present our concerns and proposal. The commissioners have stated a commitment to study the situation and endeavor to work out a reasonable solution. At present, they are still considering different options. On our part, we are committed to continue our lobbying until some acceptable solution is implemented.

In addition to this, we will be offering other lobbying projects. Our projects include making more rental housing available to responsible dog owners, accessibility to public transportation, and reforming the present City Pound to resemble a more progressive model along the lines of the Calgary Animal Services.
